TL;DR
Last time we presented schedule tools worship, The Schedule Tool Is Always Right, Schedule Dream Time, and the tenth project schedule game. The 11th project schedule game is We Gotta Have It; We Are Toast Without It. The post is based on a remarkable book written by Johanna Rothman, Manage It!
Game Pattern
You are a project manager, and your manager requires you to squeeze in the next release a key feature that would get the company a significant customer.
How To Play
First of all, you need to have well-meaning managers and team members to succeed in this situation. With this requirement, you are set for negotiation. Accept requested feature, but ask that one of the features set for release must be postponed. Mangers must suggest low priority features in this context.
The second option is to leave all the features but ask for more time to postpone the planned release.
The third option is to ask for more money to bring additional team members that could work on the requested feature.
For all those three advices to work, you need to have a timeboxed iterative project lifecycle where you develop by feature. The project team can break a feature into pebble size (one day of work) tasks.
