TL;DR
We recommend an excellent post, Dissecting an SSL certificate by Julia Evans explains SSL Certificates.
In the software testing community, there is a buzz that you do not have to have a technical background to do adequate software testing. This statement is very wrong. Everything about software is technical. I agree that there are great software testers that started without a technical background but to become skilled testers, they needed to become technical. A great example is my friend Zeljko Filipin, who always is humble about his educational background. But using self-education and the Internet, he learned Ruby and become the main contributor for Watir Project. Check out his stack overflow page.
Do not stop learning. If you are testing a web application, and the URL starts with HTTPS, you are also testing a web application certificate. This week’s recommended article could help you to understand the technical nature of SSL certificates.
